When news of casting is released, particularly for a blockbuster film, social media, especially Twitter, is quick to jump on and offer both praise and criticism.
When the news was confirmed that Halle Bailey will portray Ariel in the live-action remake of ‘The Little Mermaid’ users of the platform threw down their thoughts, with most of the posts commenting that the main character will not be white.
Not long following Disney’s announcement, Zendaya (The Greatest Showman, Spider-Man: Homecoming), who was rumoured to be given the lead role, posted her congratulation to the site in support.
Since 1996, Disney has slowly, but surely, rolled out live-action adaptations of their classic animations, starting with 101 Dalmations and, as recently, The Lion King. Many times fans of the films have voiced their concerns or support when it comes to the cast, trailers or sneak peeks.
However, for this film, the majority of the support is in favour of Bailey, with tweets suggesting that Jamin from Koren pop band BTS, portray Prince Eric.
It’s not all negative, one of the tweets did see the more humorous side of the news as you’ll see below.
The Little Mermaid will be directed by Rob Marshall and has yet to be tied down to a release date but production is due to start this year.
